Join a leading design-build construction company specializing in high-end outdoor living spaces including patios, decks, and porches. This Drafting Manager position is located in Chicagoland, Illinois, and offers the opportunity to lead the drafting department for one of the largest offices in the network while helping standardize systems, improve construction documentation, and connect what the company sells to what gets built in the field. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys building scalable systems, leading teams, and improving construction processes in a fast-growing, quality-driven environment.
Qualifications and responsibilities for this Drafting Manager position include:
- 3–5+ years of experience in construction design, drafting, engineering, or architecture – Oversee the creation of sales drawings and structural plans for a design-build construction company.
- Leadership experience managing drafting or design teams – Supervise and develop a team of drafters while managing workflow and departmental productivity.
- Strong CAD-based design experience (SoftPlan or similar platforms) – Produce and review detailed construction drawings and ensure accuracy in documentation.
- Systematic and process-driven mindset – Develop standardized systems, templates, and tools to streamline project planning and improve profitability.
- Quality control expertise for construction documentation – Ensure plans clearly communicate project scope from homeowner expectations through field crews.
- Experience coordinating structural planning and permitting – Manage structural plans and collaborate with outsourced architects and engineers for stamped drawings.
- Construction planning and takeoff experience – Prepare material takeoffs, purchase orders, and construction documentation for field teams.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills – Identify opportunities to improve pricing structures, job costing, and operational efficiency.
Salary: $120,000 - $150,000 per year, commensurate with experience.
Benefits: This full-time, permanent, direct-hire position offers great benefits including Blue Cross Blue Shield medical insurance with the company paying approximately 85% of employee premiums, optional dental and vision coverage, a 401k plan with up to a 4% company match after one year, PTO starting at two weeks in year one and increasing to 15 days in year two (negotiable based on experience), additional insurance offerings, and performance-based bonuses with on-target earnings of approximately 10–15% through monthly and quarterly bonus structures.
